Early Experience with Grace at Pomona College
Pomona College is a highly selective private residential liberal arts college with around 1600 students. For over 10 years Bruce and his colleagues have taught a Java-based introductory course at Pomona using a textbook he co-authored. This course introduces “objects-early”, using a graphics library designed for teaching. Bruce adapted the textbook and the course to Grace, without changing the fundamentals of the exercises, and have taught the Grace version of the introductory course three times. While it is too early to reach definitive conclusions, there are indications that students who start with Grace and then switch to Java may end up being better Java programmers than those who use Java from the start.
